This timeline celebrates the people, places, records, artists, DJs and moments that shaped 25 years of soul by the sea.

2002

The First Spark

The roots of Margate Soul Weekender began around Fort Hill and Carnival Corner. Eli Thompson, Olby’s, local guest DJs, a sound system and a close-knit crowd created the first gathering. It was intimate, direct and full of soul. The atmosphere was shaped by food, music, dancing and people coming together in the open air.

This was the start of the Margate soul story.

2003

The Word Begins to Travel

The early energy continued to build. More people heard about the gathering. More friends came down to Margate. The weekend began to form its own identity around familiar faces, trusted DJs and the feeling of music in the streets.

Margate was beginning to find its place on the UK soul map.

2004

The Street Energy Grows

By 2004, the gathering had become part of the summer rhythm of Margate. The event was still close to its roots, centred on community, sound systems, local hospitality and the joy of people dancing together outdoors.

The character of the Weekender was already clear: warm, open, musical and proudly Margate.

2005

A Local Gathering Becomes a Destination

More visitors began travelling into Margate for the weekend. The event started to grow beyond its original local base, attracting soul lovers from outside Thanet and Kent.

The music, the coast and the people created a weekend that felt distinct on the UK summer calendar.

2006

A Bigger Crowd, A Bigger Feeling

By 2006, Margate Soul Weekender had grown beyond early expectations. The crowd increased, the reputation spread and the event began to take on a larger role in the town’s summer culture.

The foundations were now strong: Margate, music, community and the street-party atmosphere that people still associate with the Weekender today.

2007

The Community Deepens

The Weekender continued to grow through word of mouth. Friends brought friends. DJs brought records. Families and regular visitors began building annual traditions around the weekend.

Margate was becoming a place where the soul community could gather, reconnect and celebrate together.

2008

More Music, More Movement

The sound expanded across soul, funk, rare groove, reggae, lovers rock and club classics.

The Weekender’s identity became broader while staying rooted in the same values: quality music, good people, shared joy and respect for the culture.

2011

Radio Support Expands the Reach

Support from Essex-based Zero Radio helped the event reach a wider audience. Radio played a valuable role in connecting the Weekender with listeners, DJs and soul fans beyond Margate.

The relationship helped strengthen awareness and build momentum for the years ahead.

2012

More Recognition Across the Soul Scene

The Weekender continued to build its reputation. DJs, dancers, artists and regular visitors helped spread the story. Margate became increasingly associated with a specific kind of summer weekend: soulful, social, coastal and full of character.

2013

The Margate Experience Expands

The event continued to grow across venues and outdoor spaces. Margate’s Old Town, seafront and hospitality scene became more connected to the Weekender experience. The town became part of the programme.

2014

The Sound Travels Further

By 2014, the Weekender had earned a stronger place in the UK soul calendar. Its reputation was built through consistency, community and a music policy that respected heritage while keeping the dancefloor alive.

2015

A Landmark Partnership

The partnership with Gordon Mac and the Mi-Soul Radio team helped take the event into a new phase. The audience expanded. The profile rose. The Weekender became more visible across the UK and beyond. This was a major growth moment for the Margate story.

2016

The 20th Anniversary

Margate Soul Weekender returned with a major anniversary moment. The 2022 edition marked 20 years of the festival, bringing major live artists, DJs, official venues, free Old Town stages and thousands of people back to Margate. It was a landmark year for the town and the Weekender. The celebration showed the depth of affection people have for Margate, for the music and for the community that has grown around it.

The Next Chapter Builds

After the 20th anniversary, the Weekender moved forward with renewed energy.
