Our Story
Margate Soul Weekender began with music, food, friendship and determination.
Before it became one of the UK’s signature celebrations of soul music and Black British culture, it began with rejection, resilience and a deep love for the music.
For Eli, soul was never just a soundtrack. It was a language, a lifeline and a way to bring people together when words were not always enough. What started in the streets became something far bigger: a celebration of pride, belonging, culture and connection.
In 2026, the Weekender celebrates 25 years of soul by the sea. The story began in Margate, and it continues with everyone who comes back.

The first gatherings were rooted in the streets around Fort Hill, Carnival Corner and Olby’s, where local DJs, sound systems and a close-knit crowd created the first spark. If people would not come inside, the music would go outside. The street became the stage, the community became the crowd, and the music became the message.
From early street gatherings to beachside stages, live arenas and late-night sessions, every year has added another layer to the Margate soul story. A bigger crowd. A deeper connection. A stronger line-up. A wider community. A new generation discovering the music, and a returning generation keeping the culture alive.
We're pulling together a timeline that celebrates the people, places, records, artists, DJs and moments that shaped 25 years of soul by the sea. Keep you're eyes peeled!
